Tarot: Understanding the Eight of Cups
The Eight of Cups stands for those moments when we realise, once and for all, that the past is gone. What was true, is no longer true (foc us). The signs of change are in our face, truly and unequivocally recognisable, and we must accept them and move on – or suffer.
As human beings, we tend to get trapped in mundane cycles and habits that prevent true expansion and growth. We may not like, or want, change – but ultimately it is liberating.
Are you refusing to change things even when the signs are clear that you must? When you feel tired and dispirited, you intuitively (and logically) know that something is wrong, and it’s time for a new direction. Take time to re-examine your life and priorities, and find out where you are stuck and need to move on. Perhaps it’s just a change of perception that is required, to see things in a new way. If you can’t immediately change the external circumstances of your life, you can always change the internal.
In the card above, the woman in red has decided to abandon her old ways, for they are no longer relevant in her life. Wanting no part of the past, she holds her hands up in disgust. The lonely cemetery represents all that is dead to her. The six gold cups stacked on a grave monument behind her seem alluring but they represent the detrimental habits and obsessions she once indulged in.
Empowering thoughts cause her hair to sparkle with electricity and excitement! She realises she needs to grow to stay “alive” or she will ultimately live a life that is , for all intents and purposes, a dead one.
One gold cup waits in front of her, a last temptation to return to past self-destructive habits. She must focus on the righteous path ahead that brings her true freedom and not be swayed by her past vibrations.
The time has come for you to leave an emotionally unfulfilling situation. Make the decision to do so and never look back! You may need to leave a dead end job, or an unhappy relationship. Stay committed to the change you seek. Learn from the lessons of the past and let your newfound inner wisdom guide you to a better future.
You are hesitant to remove yourself from dreaded circumstances. All your dreams are dying off because you are afraid to leave the familiar and pursue the unknown. You presently lack the resolve to disrupt the comfort of your bad habits. You must remember that nothing will ever change foe you unless you decide to change yourself.
