Is Your Life Driven By Fear or Love?
“Fear” or “Love”, that is always the choice before us. Yet those two polarities will determine very different choices, behaviors and even outcomes. Love empowers, fear disempowers. Love invites, fear insists. Love gives you the space and freedom to choose, fear demands your obedience.
Fear is a state that separates us from our Eternal Source, locking us into patterns of low self-esteem and victimisation and, ultimately, it keeps us separate from each other. I’m not talking about natural fears… a very natural fear of falling keeps us safe when climbing a tree, or rock-climbing, for example. The fear I’m talking about is a false one that is created and reinforced, through social, cultural and religious programming.
This type of fear causes us to feel unworthy and disconnected, an isolated fragment in a very large Universe that has nothing to with ‘us’. Love as a state of being, on the other hand, unifies us into wholeness and brings us trust in the magic and mystery of life. We feel connected with each other, and to the very fabric of life itself.
Have you stopped to notice how so many of our present-day institutions are still rooted in fear? As an example, if you happen to go to see a ‘financial advisor’ because you’re already feeling insecure about your future, they will assess your ‘net worth’ and then look at ‘your future’, suggesting various ways that you can ensure a ‘happy retirement’. They will most likely tell you that your family needs ‘life insurance’ cover in case you die, and that you also need ‘critical illness cover’ since it’s highly likely that you could contract a life-threatening illness in old age… rest assured, they will quote statistics to you to reinforce their powerful message, so that you will buy into their fear-based assessment of your life.
That doesn’t sound like a loving, empowering system to me!
These people typically follow protocol and only really care about putting you in a position where you feel anxiety about your future, meaning you will feel obliged to act on that to get ‘closure’. Ironically, these same people are also operating from fear because if you don’t readily buy into that model of the world, then they would be out of business!
Many religions still use fear to gain ‘obedience’ from their followers. A classic example is that ‘sex before marriage’ is wrong because it’s ‘dirty’ or ‘going against God’ or some other nonsensical belief that has nothing to do with our biological reality. Often, religious followers feel guilt for having sexual desires that are perfectly normal!
That doesn’t sound like a loving, empowering system to me!
The sad thing is that many of us are programmed to follow the voice of an external “authority” even when that advice may be detrimental to our physical, mental or emotional well-being. We have forgotten how to trust ourselves! Too often we blindly give our power away to so-called “facts” or “statistics”, instead of trusting the small, still voice of intuition.
Today, so much information is based on fear and manipulation, even when it seems positive on the surface. A while ago, one of those dramatic headlines in the papers caught my eye: “Drug That Prevents Breast Cancer for 20 Years.”
On the surface this headline seemed very positive and encouraging – but reading it through, the underlying energy of the information given was absolutely fear-based.
The giant pharmaceuticals wanted thousands of healthy women to be given breast cancer drugs such as tamoxifen or raloxifene to cut their chances of contracting the disease. Yet, even though this sounded reasonable, the list of side effects was alarming: hot flushes, nausea, indigestion, weight gain leg cramps, depression, tiredness, headaches, blood clots, vision problems, voice changes and, even though rare, womb cancer!
I was flabbergasted that we, as a society, could seek to legitimise promotion of a drug that is known to actually cause cancer, all the while claiming it prevents it?
Further questions immediately popped into my mind:
- How would they – the faceless, stern voice of ‘authority’ – determine which women to give it to?
- Who would be labelled as ‘high risk’?
- What about the nasty side effects?
- What about the right to say ‘no’?
Lastly, I asked myself, ‘would fear be used to get people to buy into it?’ and my inner voice gave me a resounding ‘yes’!
Fear sells ‘medicine’ faster than anything else on the planet, even when that ‘medicine’ is potentially harmful to human health. Just look at the vaccine debate – any critical analysis of the potential (and actual) harm caused by today’s vaccines is met with disbelief, if not outright anger. Yet that anger is entirely misplaced. When harm is ‘self-evident’ we don’t need to look to ‘clinical trials’ and ‘scientific data’, we simply need to trust the proof staring us in the face.
Today, the wide-ranging negative side effects of most medical drugs are tolerated by those who are moderately or desperately ill but it is alarming that ‘medical authority” is beginning to target healthy consumers.
Why should otherwise healthy women tolerate unnecessary and downright dangerous side effects just because they will be labelled as being ‘at risk’ by those in charge?
The new science of epi-genetics says we do not inherit disease, rather we inherit the potential for disease which is triggered by causative factors in our environment; for example, smoking heavily, drinking copious amounts of coffee and alcohol, working long hours, breathing in toxic fumes in an overcrowded, polluted city… just one of these items could turn a gene switch from ‘health’ to ‘disease’. So, we certainly don’t need to take a cancer-causing drug ‘just in case’ we get cancer – it’s insane!
Our task then is to stay fully present and alert to the danger of manipulation through fear based information. We can choose to act from love/self-love and take action when we feel empowered to do so, or we can reflexively act upon fear-based manipulations of our psyche, which will continue to leave us disempowered and vulnerable.
